Port Burwell
Bayham Ontario
Project Summary
Port Burwell is a small town located on the north shore of Lake Erie Ontario. The town required a complete overhaul of their storm sewer systems, but being on a tight budget, they needed innovative solutions to fund the project. The reconstruction project required creative problem-solving to get the job done while prioritizing a high standard of environmental stewardship. This included a phased approach to reconstruct the storm sewer network using low impact development (LID) methods, improving accessibility with a complete streets approach, and the construction of an innovative bioswale storm sewer outfall to Lake Erie.
Project Highlights
Environmental Stewardship:
The innovative bioswale system filters contaminants out of the storm water prior to its reintegration into Lake Erie, improving the quality of water going into The Great Lakes. As a result of this technology and approach, Port Burwell has been designated as a "Blue Flag Beach", indicating high environmental and quality standards.
Creative Funding Solutions:
To help cover the expense of the project, Meritech assisted Port Burwell in applying for multiple grants to fund the reconstruction initiative, and made every effort to save costs while maintaining a high standard of quality and integrity in the work.
Innovation Award:
Consulting Engineers of Ontario has recognized Meritech with an innovation award for this precedent-setting project.
